Approach to Psychotherapy

Waiting Room Area
My work is grounded in a psychodynamic, insight-oriented approach, while using additional effective cognitive-behavioral, dialectical behavioral and shorter-term therapy strategies as needed.
The psychodynamic approach provides the opportunity to experience thoughts and feelings you may often be unaware of that can influence your behaviors. This can be especially effective if you find that you have patterns in your behaviors or relationships that leave you feeling stuck, feeling you can’t be yourself, have questions about identity, or believe you may have long-standing difficulties stemming from your family of origin or life experiences.
We work together to understand your emotions and behaviors, while working together to actively make changes now. I believe that a core focus on emotions and the relational aspects of our lives is important in many problems people bring to therapy.
The most effective therapy can be when one commits to giving themselves the time and space to understand your unique personal history and your current patterns very well. For many people, this is an ongoing, weekly process to do this in a deeper, meaningful way that can lead to lasting change.
However, for some this may not be feasible and I believe this should not keep you from benefiting from the work that therapy can offer. Sometimes, people have a specific concern that they would like to address more immediately. I also offer short-term as well as single-session therapy. The benefit of private practice is that I can tailor the work to your specific needs and goals.
Beginning or trying therapy doesn’t require certainty, only a willingness to take an initial step. Please contact me if you would like to find out more about psychotherapy and the various options available for your concerns. People often have questions about how to select a therapist or about how therapy works, or how long people are in therapy. I will make sure your questions are addressed. I can provide a brief telephone consultation to answer questions before setting up an appointment. All inquiries are confidential.
